The National Gallery of Modem Art The gallery, set in spacious art-deco rooms, houses the richest collection of contemporary art in Italy. From Balla's Futurism and Boccioni's dynamic forms in space, to the early Burri with his burnt raw materials and Fontana's Cuts. World famous masters and upcoming artists are well represented too.

The House of Giorgio De Chirico The last residence of the famous artist is set on the top floor of a palazzo overlooking the Spanish steps. Here he lived with his second wife, a Russian ballet dancer, whose unfinished portrait still sits on the easel up in the attic. The rooms are hung with paintings of silent spaces that are only populated by classical statues and surreal towers. De Chirico created Metaphysical painting in 1917 when he started to produce images that were imbued with a strangely oniric atmosphere.

The "Casina delle Civette" (can be included on a full day tour) Built around 1920 as a small dependence, the "Casina delle Civette" (the owl pavilion) is one of the best examples of the Italian "Stile liberty" (Art Nouveau). It is set within the park of Villa Torlonia that also includes an eclectic garden, a fake hill, a bamboo lake, medieval-style huts and tropical green houses. The pavilion provides an interesting contrast to the main villa which, on the contrary, is built in an imposing Palladian style.

The overall appearance of the property is the result of the patronage of Prince Giovanni Torlonia, who rejected the traditional luxury of old-master paintings and the taste for ornate furniture, still predominant in the aristocratic circles of Rome, favouring instead the refined work of English artisans of the early 19th century. The prince commissioned stained glass with intriguing art-nouveau patterns and English bay windows for his bedroom.

Upon Mussolini's decision to move into the main villa, the casino became the Prince's home, giving us today a fascinating insight in his avant-garde taste and complex personality.
